Independence, ungoverned, becomes contrarianism: rejecting a thing because the crowd embraced it, mistaking detachment for wisdom, being different on reflex rather than conviction.

And the love of humanity-in-general can become an excuse to dodge the human-in-particular — easier to care about everyone than to be intimate with someone.

In Love
